Join us for authentic West African djembe drumming led by Baba Abubakr Kouyate, a master drummer with 40 years of experience. He teaches in African village style. All levels play and learn complex rhythms together on sangba, dunnun-ba, kenkeni, and djembe. Each person learns at his/her own pace. The purpose of the group is a monthly gathering to play drums, celebrate the divine beat that the universe speaks through the voices of drums. Drums are as old as the the people who first walked the earth. They were used in many rituals, war, sounding alarm, as well as in prayer and celebration. Scientific research has proven the healing effects of drum rhythms on the mind, body and spirit. Welcome to "Imani Vida Drum Circle". Imani means Faith in Swahili, and Vida means Life in Spanish. We are a group of diverse individuals of the Greater Houston Area who love to come together in community and make music together. We make music through all sorts of percussion instuments...hand drums, shakers, rain sticks and even the sound of foot stomping music. Drummers of all skill levels are welcome. No prior drumming experience is required to participate in our circle. Dancers are welcome too …
